SINOSSI
Il sergente Stryker (Wayne) è al comando di un plotone di reclute dei marines. Per i suoi modi di addestramento brutali e violenti è odiato da tutta la truppa. Stryker è un soldato che sa quanto valga un buon addestramento per affrontare una battaglia. È per questo che chiede il massimo ai suoi uomini. Questi se ne accorgeranno durante lo sbarco a Iwo Jima, dove scopriranno il lato umano del loro sergente................
RECENSIONE
Un film di guerra severo, che ha per la prima volta e in seguito sarà imitato più volte (Full Metal jacket), lo scopo di mostrare come spesso nell'esercito ci siano dei sergenti spietati, che vogliono solo morte, ma in realtà sotto la divisa sono solo dei semplici uomini ricchi di umanità . Allan Dwan dirige con maestria e recupera molte scene autentiche, tra cui l'alzabandiera sul monte Suribachi, per dare più drammaticità all'intera opera. John Wayne, è grande, riesce a infondere forza e carisma al suo personaggio, tanto da ricevere la sua prima nomination all'Oscar. Uscì nelle sale il 14 dicembre 1949, costò 1 milione di dollari e solo negli Stati Uniti incassò 5 milioni di dollari.
